What should I expect?
Before the procedure
This procedure is performed in the clinic as an outpatient. It will take anywhere from 15-60 minutes depending on the size of your thyroid nodule. You will be asked to change into a surgical gown and grounding pads will be applied to your thighs.
You will receive local anesthesia around the surgical site.
During the procedure
You will feel some pressure and may hear some background noise and the occasional “pop”
You will be able to talk, swallow and breathe throughout the procedure. Most people have little to no pain during the ablation.
Some patients describe mild discomfort in the ear, jaw, shoulder or back.
After the procedure
A nurse will monitor your vital signs and puncture site before you get discharged.
Your neck will feel stiff immediately after the procedure and there may be some swelling - this can be treated by icing the area for 20 minutes 2-3 times a day.
