Indications for RFA

Symptomatic Benign Nodules

Thyroid Nodules that are causing any compressive symptoms or can be seen pushing outside of the skin that are bothersome. The recent studies show about 70-80% of the nodule volume decreases over the first 9-12 months after RFA.

Single/Hot Functional Nodules

Thyroid nodules which have shown to be functional from an Thyroid uptake scan in the context of the patient having hyperthyroidism. Current studies show about 50% of patients are euthyroid after a year but other patients are also improved in their functional disease.

Thyroid nodules that are 2cm or smaller that have been biopsied as thyroid cancer (Bethesda 5/6) or indeterminate (Bethesda 3/4) could meet criteria for a study we are doing using RFA.

Small Thyroid Cancers and Indeterminant Nodules
